Self-Control

Ok,  so, here’s the deal…let me just lay it  all out on the table…

We ALL struggle with self-control.   Period.   No one’s exempt from this one.   But, guess what, there’s hope!   In fact, there’s more than hope!

When  you and I hear the words “self-control” most of us think  of how Webster’s  dictionary defines having self-control as “denying one’s own desires”.

In this message Joe shares a definition of self-control that is  much more  encouraging.   He  teaches that the Greek definition of our English word self-control is “infused with power and strength“.

When most of us think about self-control, we think about our weaknesses…not about God’s power and strength flowing through us!

Listen to how Pastor Joe further explains this amazing resource and tool for worship.   What  a gift the Holy Spirit has given each of us…Self-Control.

Self-Control  - Part  seven in the series “Surviving the Moral Maze”.   This message was recorded live on October 29, 2006.

Respect

Mr. Miller was my high school English teacher and one of my coaches…   Mr. Miller was a former wrestler and Marine.   We were good friends even outside of school.   We played golf together.   We played racketball together.
One time I called him at home and when he answered  the phone  I said, “Hey Tim!”
Total silence on the other end of the line.
The next day I went to school and Mr. Miller called me into his office and said, “I am not ‘Tim’, I am ‘Mr. Miller’.”
And you know what…he was right!   I gave him a lack of respect.   And if he walked in door right now I would still call him ‘Mr. Miller’.
A lack of respect.   In our culture and society  today, that word “respect” has just kind of…disappeared!   Where has common courtesy and respect gone in our day?   Holding the door open for women…replying with, “Yes, Sir” or “No, Ma’am”…being nice to little children…showing respect to our elders…   It just doesn’t happen very much.   Where have these courtesies gone?

This is how Pastor Joe began  his  message on Respect.   To hear the rest of this message simply ‘right-click’ your mouse on the link below and select “Save Target As…” to download the entire message to your computer.

Forgiveness

Forgiveness, part 4 in the Moral Maze seriesWe all need to be forgiven!  Not one of us has not done or said something that hurt someone else.   But, we know that…

What about the person who has hurt us?   Have we forgiven them?   Holding onto the wrongs done against us only destroys us…not the other person!   Bitterness and resentment are like a poison that slowly eats us up from the inside out.

Forgiveness is not a sign of weakness, but of strength!   Do you have the guts to forgive the person who has hurt you the most?   It may not be easy, but if not you are ultimately hurting yourself even more!

In this message, as he continues with  his series, Surviving the Moral Maze, Pastor Joe Ganahl speaks on forgiveness, both human and divine.   Then, he asks Barb Frick to share her testimony on how she had to both forgive herself and seek God’s forgiveness for a severly difficult choice she made 28 years ago…the abortion of her daughter, Johanna.

This  relevant message is an encouragement to all of us!   Not only has God forgiven us, but he has asked us to forgive  others.

Study Guide - The study guide questions for your individual or small group study.
